lens-op1 sThe operation is performed in a short walk-in treatment of roughly 15 minutes duration. The natural lens is removed painless and replaced by an artificial lens (intraocular lens or IOL).

Normally the operation under performed in local anesthesia. To enable the insertion of the surgical instruments and the IOL, the eye is opened by a small corneal cut (a few millimeters long). In standard cases this will heal after the operation without the need for any sutures. After opening the lens capsule the clouded lens is normally emulsified using smooth ultrasound technology and aspirated.

In the next step the IOL is placed into the remaining capsular bag. Nowadays, in most cases, a foldable IOL is inserted through the small cut which then easily unfolds in the eye.

In normal cases clear vision returns shortly after the operation.
