Standard, “monofocal” IOLs deliver optical correction for just one distance. Usually this power is selected to correct the patient’s distance vision, with spectacles being used to see objects in the intermediate to near distance.

This limitation is eliminated by modern multifocal Diffractiva® IOLs that feature special optical properties to enable the patient to see clearly at all required distances without any additional visual aids. After a successful operation and a completed healing process, normal everyday life can be resumed, for the most part without glasses.

The Diffractiva® IOLs are manufactured in complex production processes, in which special optical structures are created that appear as “rings” on the surface. Thereby sharp imaging at near and far distances is enabled. Under high magnification the “rings” are obvious as being a fine step profile. The precise composition of step height and distance are responsible for the resulting visual quality the IOL delivers.

This “ring structure“ enables sharp vision at different distances, but could also cause some optical side effects. As a result the Diffractiva®-ring-structure is limited to the inner central part of the lens instead of covering the entire surface. This coupled with other aspects of the Diffractiva®´s optical design reduces these unwanted optical phenomena to a minimum. Therefore most patients soon get used to the Diffractiva®.

During pre-examination the eye consultant will judge the patients suitability for multifocal IOLs and will explain possible limitations of this IOL type.
the DIFFRACTIVA® dynamic adaption
The special configuration in the step-profile of the Diffractivas ring-structure not only reduces the unwanted side effects, but  the whole concept is designed for the needs of daily life.
Dependent upon the light conditions and visual requirements the pupil dynamically adjusts its diameter. The ring-structure of the Diffractiva® is adjusted to harmonize with the natural pupil.

In low light conditions the pupil dilates and therefore the complete IOL optic is used: the central ring-structure as well as the peripheral zone without rings. Thus, far vision is enhanced, which is of high importance especially in low light conditions, such as driving a car at dawn/dusk.

Most of the time near sighted skills like reading take place in bright light conditions and thus with constricted pupil diameters. In these conditions, only the IOL´s inner, central ring-structure is utilised which improves near vision.

In this way the Diffractiva® is ideally adjusted to the respective, variable light condition and thus enables comfortable vision during the various activities of daily life.

Study results
In a study questionnaire* regarding the Diffractiva® 95,8% of patients answered the question "Could you please evaluate the discomfort generated by these photic phenomena (glare, halos, stars)?" with "none/ little" and only 4,1% with "moderate".
