The natural iris not only gives our eyes their color and thus our personal appearance, it also plays an important role within the optical system. Therefore aniridia not only reduces visual quality due to photophobia, aberration disorders, glare effects and loss in depth of focus, but also causes severe aesthetical limitations. Complete or partial aniridia may be caused by congenital aniridia as well as acquired defects, like trauma and diseases.
With the ArtificialIris HumanOptics (formerly Dr. Schmidt Intraocularlinsen) has finally come up with a solution that offers a genuine improvement in the quality of life for people with aniridia, regardless whether they suffer from partial or complete aniridia. In contrast to former implants that are only available in preassigned standard colors, the ArtificialIris is fully customized in its color composition, imitating the natural iris of the patient. Only this procedure assures a most natural appearance and leads to very high patient satisfaction.
Besides aesthetical restoration the ArtificialIris also decreases glare and improves depth of focus as well as contrast sensitivity. With partial aniridia the ArtificialIris even enables maintenance of the remaining natural iris in combination with a partial implant.
The ArtificialIris is made of foldable, highly biocompatible silicone material that has been tested and proven with intraocular lenses over many years. To meet the requirements of different indications, the ArtificialIris is available in two different models: the model with polymer fiber meshwork is intended for fixation with sutures e.g. with device segment use, the fiber free model without polymer fiber meshwork can be selected for sutureless fixation with complete device use. As its flexible material is foldable and rollable the ArtificialIris will fit through incisions of approx. 3.0 mm and smaller.
Delivered as a 360° implant with a standard 12.8 mm overall diameter the ArtificialIris can be trimmed with a trephine to custom-fit the device according to individual requirements. Please find further sizing application information here.
In cases of partial aniridia it can easily be cut into a suitable segment for suturing to the iris remnant.
